Otsuzumi was a large tsuzumi, a hourglass-shaped drum played with the hand. When playing, the drum was held in the left hand and rested on the left thigh. The drum heads were struck with the right hand, producing a sharp dry sound. Drummers wore finger guards made of papier-mache, which heightened the sharpness of the sound.
