  • Chemotherapy was a type of cancer treatment that was used on Earth in the 20th century. It was often evaluated against other medical procedures, among which including image therapy. Doctor Leonard McCoy, while present in the year 1986 after time traveling, was once asked in an elevator what his views were regarding chemotherapy after he remarked that it was "unbelievable" patients had to endure such treatment. McCoy's response was: "Sounds like the goddamn Spanish Inquisition if you ask me!" Later, in the operating room, he referred to it and fundoscopic examinations as "medievalism". (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)
  • Chemotherapy primarily refers to the treatment of cancer with one or more drugs that inhibit the growth of malignant cells as part of a regimen. Certain chemotherapy agents also have a role in the treatment of other conditions, including ankylosing spondylitis, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and scleroderma. Newer anticancer drugs act directly against abnormal proteins in cancer cells; this is termed “targeted therapy” and, in the technical sense, is not chemotherapy.
  • Chemotherapy is the use of chemical substances to treat disease. In its modern-day use, it refers primarily to cytotoxic drugs used to treat cancer. Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cells due to damage to DNA (mutations) and, occasionally, due to an inherited propensity to develop certain tumours. Autoimmune diseases arise from an overactive immune response of the body against substances and tissues normally present in the body - in other words, the body attacks its own cells. In contrast, transplant rejection happens because a normal healthy human immune system can distinguish foreign tissues and attempts to destroy them. Also the reverse situation, called graft-versus-host disease, may take place.

The most common chemotherapy agents act by killing cells that divide rapidly, one of the main properties of most cancer cells. This means that chemotherapy also harms cells that divide rapidly under normal circumstances: cells in the bone marrow, digestive tract, and hair follicles. This results in the most common side-effects of chemotherapy: decreased production of blood cells, hence also immunosuppression), inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract, and hair loss.
Broadly, most chemotherapeutic drugs work by impairing mitosis (cell division), effectively targeting fast-dividing cells. As these drugs cause damage to cells they are termed cytotoxic. Some drugs cause cells to undergo apoptosis (so-called "cell suicide").
