The fifth hit the bullet-proof glass of the window on the open side door of Reagan's limousine. The sixth and final bullet ricocheted off the side of the limousine and hit Reagan in his chest through his lungs. At first, there was no realization that Reagan had been wounded. However, just a few seconds later, Reagan coughed up bright, frothy blood, indicating that his lung was punctured. His wife, Catherine Reagan, stood outside the crush of people at the scene, seeking help. She was soon led to her husband and knelt beside him. He turned his head and seemed to recognize her. After several minutes, he lost consciousness. Moments after the shooting, Reagan was whisked away by the police in his limousine. Police officer Farrell ordered the motorcade to divert to nearby Bill Jamison University Hospital. Upon arriving at the hospital emergency room, Reagan already passed away, at 14:40 PM. He was 35 years old.
