It was created sometime between 2374 and 2376, following the discovery of Voyager's presence in the Delta Quadrant when The Doctor was sent to the USS Prometheus. It was overseen by Admiral Owen Paris, and was based at Starfleet's Communications Research Center. The day-to-day running of the project was handled by Commander Peter Harkins, and its staff included Lieutenant Reginald Barclay. Deep Space 9 also assisted the project by providing interstellar phenomena forecasts.

  • The Pathfinder Project was a Starfleet operation conceived as a means of initiating contact with the USS Voyager after she was discovered to be stranded in the Delta Quadrant. Project Pathfinder was under the overall command of Admiral Owen Paris, and supervised by Commander Peter Harkins, based out of the Starfleet Communications Research Center. Lieutenant Reginald Barclay was also a member of the team. (VOY: "Pathfinder"} The project began sometime after contact was made with Voyager's Emergency Medical Hologram, who had been temporarily transported to the Alpha Quadrant in 2374. (VOY: "Message in a Bottle") Contact was successfully achieved with Voyager in 2376, through the use of the MIDAS Array. Initial contact was brief and sporadic, but soon, Starfleet was able to send monthly communications packets to Voyager. By 2378, daily real-time communication was possible with Voyager for 11-minute intervals. (VOY: "Pathfinder", "Life Line", "Author, Author", et al) Through contact with Voyager during the last few years of the ship's Delta Quadrant sojourn, the Pathfinder Project was able to amass a vast database of information on the region and its inhabitants. (DS9 novel: Demons of Air and Darkness, et al)
  • The Pathfinder Project, also known as Project Voyager, was a Starfleet operation that was created as a means of communicating with the USS Voyager after it was stranded within the Delta Quadrant and it was discovered that Voyager did indeed survive. (VOY episode: "Pathfinder") The Project started between 2374 to 2376 and was overseen by Admiral Owen Paris. Its base of operations included Starfleet Communications Research Center where it was administrated by Commander Peter Harkins and led by Lieutenant Reginald Barclay. The first success of Project Pathfinder was in 2376 when it used the MIDAS Array to send a transmission through a micro-wormhole. By 2377, the level of commuication had improved to such an extent that regular transmissions for up to 11 minutes so that they could be made to aid Voyager as it journeyed back home as well as allow communication with family. (VOY episodes: "Life Line", "Inside Man", "Endgame") Admiral William Ross asked the crew of Deep Space 9 for their opinions on the Pathfinder Project's database. Julian Bashir had identified the Hirogen, Species 8472, the Vaadwaur and the Srivani as potential threats to the United Federation of Planets. Cole and Section 31 had also identified potentially dangerous Delta Quadrant species. (DS9 - Section 31 novel: Abyss) The crew of the USS da Vinci consulted the information on Project Voyager on multiple occasions, in order to learn more about the mobile emitter (SCE eBook: Malefictorum) and the technical specifications of Borg cubes. (CoE eBook: The Light) Captain Walter Emick consulted the Pathfinder Project during the Gateways Crisis, to see if Voyager could use a Iconian Gateway near Europa Nova that would enable them to return to the Alpha Quadrant. Voyager proved to be nowhere near the Delta Quadrant gateway, although Kira Nerys suggested they might be able to use another one to get home. (DS9 - Gateways novel: Demons of Air and Darkness) The database of all information of the Pathfinder Project were consulted by the crew of the USS Defiant when they encountered the Borg in the Gamma Quadrant in 2376. (DS9 - Mission Gamma novel: Lesser Evil) In late 2376, Fabian Stevens accessed specifications of the Doctor's mobile emitter from Project Voyager files to conduct experimentation with. He noted that chief engineer B'Elanna Torres had "a very weird way of keeping her notes." (SCE eBook: Malefictorum)

The day-to-day running of the project was handled by Commander Peter Harkins, and its staff included Lieutenant Reginald Barclay. Deep Space 9 also assisted the project by providing interstellar phenomena forecasts. It first made contact with Voyager in 2376, using the MIDAS array to create a micro-wormhole. Although the first communication was brief and problematic – merely allowing Admiral Paris to talk to Captain Kathryn Janeway, who assured him that his son was performing well – the communications technology improved to a level whereby contact could be made on a regular basis. In 2377, the crew was able to receive monthly data streams from Earth that included letters from the crew's families, tactical upgrades, and news about the Alpha Quadrant. By 2378, Operation Watson resulted in two-way visual communication every day for eleven minutes. (VOY: "Pathfinder", "Life Line", "Inside Man", "Author, Author", "Endgame") In the DS9 Mission Gamma novel Lesser Evil, the crew of the USS Defiant consult the Pathfinder Project's database for Voyager's information on the Borg after discovering a Borg presence in the Gamma Quadrant.
