He played major junior hockey with the Saskatoon Blades, Nanaimo Clippers, Billings Bighorns, and the Medicine Hat Tigers. Trottier played in only 38 NHL games and scored 6 goals and 4 assists. In the Devils' 5-2 win at the Izod Center (then known as the Brendan Byrne Arena) on December 17, 1984, Rocky scored on a penalty shot against Edmonton Oilers's goaltender Andy Moog; it was the first penalty shot attempt in the Devils' franchise history.
