He played junior hockey for the Stratford Midgets in 1937-38. Then he played in 1938-39 and 1939-40 for the Oshawa Generals, winning the Memorial Cup in each season. McAtee also led the Ontario Hockey Association Junior League in scoring in 1939-40. In 1940 he signed as a free agent with the Detroit Red Wings. He spent the next three seasons with the Indianapolis Capitals and was called up for one game with the Wings in 1942-43.
