Plates were originally cast iron and then later tended to be cast Brass as also used for name plates on steam locomotives, as more intricate shapes could be cast easier and serial numbers stamped in later on identical plates made in batches. Modern plates are metalic plastic films stuck on with special glue. These modern plates usually include a barcode for tracking by the manufacturer during production and through the supply chain by computerised systems.

The manufactures name and logo is also usually applied to the machine by large decals of a standard design on to the sides and front of the machine, or cast into major parts such as the radiator or a counter weight. In the past these were signwriten in paint before WWII then after the war large transferes started to be used as were used on aircraft. These were replaced by selfadhesive plastic signs from the 1960s onwards for most tractor makers, as they are far cheaper than chrome plated cast metal used before on alot of vehicles after the Brass or cast iron plate era.
