The first novel makes several differences: The opening is based on the original intro for the film; the killer murders Barry on the lakeside and pursues Claudette to the nearby boathouse, who then cuts their finger off before she is killed. Annie does not stop to talk to the dog. Ennis is more worried about Annie going to Crystal Lake and tries to convince her to come back to the town with him. Annie's chase scene is extended. She falls into a river before she is killed. Marcie thinks she sees a figure through the trees. It is later revealed that the figure was Crazy Ralph.

Ned sees Marcie and Jack kissing from across the lake, which is why he sulks over to the cabin. Ned mistakes the figure he sees in the window for Brenda. He thinks that she is waiting to have sex with him and follows them inside. Marcie and Jack's sex scene is described in detail. More detail is given to the Monopoly game. Brenda follows the screaming to the cabin where Ned was killed and discovers his corpse. She then retreats to the archery range, where the killer turns the lights on. When Steve returns to the camp, rather than someone shining a light at him and then stabbing him, they flash him with their headlights and then run him down as he approaches. The final struggle between Pamela and Alice is longer; Alice hits Pamela with an ore and she falls into the water. She then leaps back out and Alice retrieves the machete.
