- Abin Sur was born on the planet Ungara where he was one of two siblings with the other being his sister Arin Sur in the years prior to the 19th Century. As a child, he grew up with his best friend Ruch Ehr and later, by association, his girlfriend Munni Jah. Though Sur was secretly in love with Munni, he never spoke about this matter overtly and instead left his feelings unspoken. During his time on his homeworld, he became a history professor and quite skilled as being a teacher as well as a philosopher. In the mid 1860s, his homeworld of Ungara came under the threat from a powerful tyrant known as Devos Ungol who went by the name of Traitor. This warlord gathered a large armada which he intended to conquer the stars with Sur's homeworld being one of the many planets within its path. Howe
- Abin Sur was the Green Lantern of Sector 2814 up until his death. His ship crash lands on Earth. As he lays there, he knows that he is too weak to carry out his work as Intergalactic Space Patrolman. So, with what little energy he has, he tries to seek out a deserving earthling to pass on his battery of power. He touches his ring to the battery of power knowing that it will find an honest and fearless one to take his place. It finds test-pilot, Hal Jordan, who is seated in his flightless jet-trainer.
- Originally a history professor on the planet Ungara, Abin Sur was soon appointed Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814 in the mid 1860's. As a child, he became best friends with Ruch Ehr and later, by association, Munni Jah. The two of them were a couple and Abin secretly loved Munni, but never overtly spoke of this. Recruited by the Green Lantern known as Starkaðr, he is known to have come to Earth on several occasions. In the Old West, he teamed up with an Henry Lee Jordan, an ancestor of Hal Jordan, to battle an alien named Traitor (who was responsible for the death of Starkaðr).
