Cameron was a member of the Battersea Vestry, an overseer of the parish charities, chairman of the Battersea Library Commissioners and of the Battersea Water Consumers Defence Association. In 1885 he was nominated to be a member of the Metropolitan Board of Works by the Wandsworth District Board (whose area included Battersea). He remained a member of the MBW until its abolition and replacement by the London County Council in 1889. Cameron was a candidate at the first county council elections in January 1889 for Battersea. Described as a "Radical" or "Independent Liberal", he narrowly failed to be elected by a margin of 28 votes.
