Carson had come to Brazil in the 1880s, met the King and family and quickly seduced his youngest daughter. With the coup in 1889 that deposed the emperor, William and Maria were quickly (and secretly) married and soon left the country, first to Mexico and then through San Francisco to Lovia.

With the coup in 1889 that deposed the emperor, William and Maria were quickly (and secretly) married and soon left the country, first to Mexico and then through San Francisco to Lovia. They soon moved to Hurbanova, where her father worked in the mines. In 1907, Johan I, while still a prince, came to Lovia to establish relations. In Hurbanova, he met a young Elisabeth and fell in love with her. He brought her back to Brunant with him, and officially became Princess Elisabeth.
