  • The Megaraptor is a scrapped species of theropod that was originally going to appear in the game but was then replaced by Utahraptor. Despite its name, it is actually a fictional species and is different from the real Megaraptor.
  • Note: Despite initial fossil reconstructions, Megaraptor is not actually a part of the dromaeosaurid family, but is part of a group of theropods called the Megaraptorans. This group has long been assigned to the neovenatorid family of carnosaurs, but new theories place it within the tyrannosauroid superfamily, closely related to the tyrannosaurid family, though megalosauroids and basal coelurosaurs have also been proposed; at present, it is removed from any particular theropod group until can be more definitively classified. The claw on the foot has now been discovered to be a thumb claw that was probably used to grasp prey.
  • As far as raptors go, many people have heard of Megaraptor, the largest of all raptors. However, Megaraptor probably wasn't really a raptor at all. It was recently confirmed to be a neovenatorid allosauroid, in the same group as Australovenator and Fukuiraptor. The first fossil of Megaraptor ever found was a single, curving claw, measuring a foot in length. This was thought to be one of the killing claws found on all raptors' middle toes, but turned out to be a hand claw. It is interesting that this very case of misidentification occurred with another theropod; Baryonyx. This spinosaur was originally thought to be a giant raptor too, but again the giant curved claw turned out to be a hand claw.

  • Megaraptor was initially described as a giant dromaeosaur, known primarily from a single claw (about 30 cm long) that resembled the sickle-shaped foot claw of dromaeosaurids.[1] The discovery of a complete front limb, however, showed that this giant claw actually came from the first finger of the hand. The hands were unusually elongated, bearing sickle-shaped claws even more recurved than those of spinosaurids.[2] The hand is quite distinct from other basal tetanurans, so it was not initially clear whether Megaraptor was an allosaurid, a carcharodontosaurid, a spinosauroid, or something else entirely.[3] Subsequent studies, as well as the identification of close relatives with similar large claws on the forelimbs (see below), helped identify Megaraptor as a highly advanced and lightly buil

  • Megaraptor was a large, terrifying late Cretaceous predator with two enormous, sickle-like toe claws. It was a huge, lightly built, fast-moving, agile, bipedal (walked on two legs), bird-like dinosaur. It had a curved, flexible neck, and a big head with sharp, serrated teeth in very powerful jaws. Some scientists believe that Megaraptor is actually an adult Unenlagia The type species of the genus Megaraptor is M. namunhuaiquii (Novas, 1998); this species is named for the Mapuche (an Argentinian Indian language) word for "foot lance".
