Jost Duerr was the senior pastor of St. John's Church in Badenburg and the scion of an influential family. He was a senior to Steffan Schultheiss, the pastor of St. Nicholas' Church. Duerr was well connected with Badenburg's town council and politics, and was quite quick to change sides when it suited him. Later, Duerr was surprised when Schultheiss' took a more tolerant stance on God and organized religion. Duerr condemned his fellow pastor as irresponsible and endangering the souls of his (Schultheiss') congregation.
