- Following the invasion of Canada by the US Army during the Great War in 1914, the Royal Winnipeg Rifles formed elite commando units which were trained to carry out actions of sabotage behind American lines. Arthur McGregor gave refuge in his home to a soldier of such a unit, Sgt. Malcolm Lockerby, sent to sabotage railway lines used by the Americans. McGregor's son, Alexander, admired Lockerby and wanted to take part in his mission. Lockerby refused, saying that his mission was designed for one person only.
