| - An ultra-violet light or UV light is a light source that emits in the ultra-violetspectrum. UV lights are otherwise the same as flashlights, floodlights, and powerlights.
- Ultraviolet (UV) light is an electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength from 400 nm (750 THz) to 10 nm (30 PHz), shorter than that of visible light but longer than X-rays. UV radiation is present in sunlight, and also produced by electric arcs and specialized lights such as mercury-vapor lamps, tanning lamps, and black lights. "Germicidal" lamps are used extensively for disinfection of surfaces in laboratories and food processing industries, and for disinfecting water supplies. Some animals, including birds, reptiles, and insects such as bees, can see near-ultraviolet light.

UV radiation is present in sunlight, and also produced by electric arcs and specialized lights such as mercury-vapor lamps, tanning lamps, and black lights. A shortwave UV lamp can be made using a fluorescent lamp tube with no phosphor coating. These lamps emit ultraviolet light with two peaks in the UVC band at 253.7 nm and 185 nm due to the mercury within the lamp. Eighty-five to 90% of the UV produced by these lamps is at 253.7 nm, whereas only five to ten percent is at 185 nm. "Germicidal" lamps are used extensively for disinfection of surfaces in laboratories and food processing industries, and for disinfecting water supplies. Some animals, including birds, reptiles, and insects such as bees, can see near-ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet traps called bug zappers are used to eliminate various small flying insects. They are attracted to the UV light, and are killed using an electric shock, or trapped once they come into contact with the device. These devices may attract mites, but do not kill them. For a UV light to have a knockdown, killing, or disabling effect on mites the light must be more powerful than 254 nm. UV light can break down plastic causing it to turn yellow and may have a highly detrimintal effect on human skin and eyes.
