- The Republic of Jonesboro became a recognized, independent nation in November 2007 after declaring independence from Pinellia, which had control of the region for nearly two hundred years. A revolution began in 2004 after civil war broke out in the region following local elections which had been tampered with by the Pinellia government. The Stirling Resistance, led by Mark Thomas, an Army colonel, seized control of the area and waged war with Pinellia for over two years, finally declaring a cease-fire after both sides came to the city of Stirling, within Jonesboro, to talk about possible negotiations. A year later, Pinellia agreed to recognize the area of Jonesboro as an independent, sovereign nation.

A year later, Pinellia agreed to recognize the area of Jonesboro as an independent, sovereign nation. Mark Thomas, the leader of the resistance army, was named Interim President during this time, and as a republic government was formed, Thomas was named Premier and established a House of Stirling, a law-making body of government elected by the people.
