Merida's coronation is held in the main hall of the DunBroch Castle. As he brothers sit nearby, Merida is almost crowned by her mother, Elinor, but she's stopped when the Witch arrives. She reveals King Fergus has an unpaid debt with her after he borrowed magic, and unless the enchanted helm is returned to her, the entire kingdom shall be cursed into bears. Elinor goes searching in the bedrooms, but Merida reveals the helm won't be in the castle, for Fergus was wearing it when he died, which means the killer has it. She sets off to find her father's killer, but after learning what the enchanted helm was used for, she gives up all hope and returns to the castle. Much to Elinor's disapproval, Merida promises that if Lord Macintosh is able to retrieve the helm in time, he can have the crown.

However, despite this, Merida is still able to retrieve the helm (although with a bit of help) and she is finally crowned as Queen of DunBroch. When the Witch arrives to collect the helm, Merida refuses to give it, for she believes no man should be forced into fighting a battle they don't believe in. This pleases the Witch, who gifts her with magic ale for passing her test. ("The Bear King")
