  • The 917th Air Refueling Squadron is an inactive United States Air Force unit. It was last assigned as a GSU (Geographically Separated Unit) as the aircraft remained at Dyess AFB, Texas, while the unit was assigned to the 43d Operations Group, stationed at Malmstrom AFB, Montana. It was inactivated on 1 July 1994. On 19 Sep 1985, The 917th Air Refueling Squadron was consolidated with the 617th Bombardment Squadron. Established on 1 May 1959 by Strategic Air Command at Biggs AFB, Texas and equipped with KC-135 Stratotankers. Mission was to provide air refueling to the B-52 Stratofortress strategic bombers of its parent 95th Bombardment Wing and other USAF units as directed. Reassigned to the SAC 96th Strategic Aerospace (later Bombardment) Wing in 1965 at Dyess AFB, Texas with the closure of Biggs AFB. Remained at Dyess until 1993 when the squardrons KC-135A's were retired at Dyess. Reassigned to the 43d Operations Group at Malmstrom, inactivated in 1994 when Malmstrom's flightline was closed and the 43d ARW became an Air Mobility Command Airlift Wing at Pope AFB.
