The Pubescents, or the Pubes for short are the original defenders of the city of Lud seen in The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands. The Pubes live above-ground in City North of Lud. The Pubes received their name when the first group of harriers came to the city of Lud. The Pubes at the time were very young and were well-educated. Since that time, the ages of the two groups has been in flux. Now, the Grays are actually younger than the Pubes and have become their arch-enemies. They are easily identifiable due to the headscarves they wear which are blue.

The Pubes live with the belief that there are Ghosts in the Machines living under the city of Lud. They believe that if these demons aren't appeased they will animate the bodies of Lud's many dead and rise up to eat the living. The form of their appeasement takes the form of sacrificing their own whenever the God-drums are played. The God-drums are in reality the drum track for the ZZ Top song, Velcro Fly, but each time they hang one of their members from a light pole. They are easily identifiable due to the headscarves they wear which are blue.
