The VM1 is based on the 1986 Roadstar series body, a shape Ibanez abandoned for regular production models with the introduction of the RG550 in 1987. It has a Honduran mahogany body bolted to a maple neck with a 22-fret ebony fingerboard with dot position markers. It has dual DiMarzio Double Whammy humbucking pickups mounted in a pickguard and Sperzel locking tuners. Some collectors have noted that there appear to be differences in the finishes between the "F7" (presumably 1988) and "F9" (1989) examples with the color among the examples from one year yellowing more with age than the others.
