  • Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (born July 30, 1947) is an Austrian politician who was the Chancellor of Austria from October 9, 2003 until October 30, 2014 and is the Chairman of the People's Alliance (VA) political party, which has held majority in the Parliament of Austria since 2003. Schwarzenegger has been the head of the VA since 2001, when he defeated then-leader Wolfgang Schüssel at the party conference. Schwarzenegger was an Olympian athlete, actor and businessman until he stood for a seat that included his hometown of Thal and much of the eastern suburbs and exurbs of Graz in a 1996 by-election after the SPÖ member of the Reichsversammlung (MRV) resigned in disgrace in a corruption scandal. He was re-elected in his own right in the general elections of 1997 and 2000, after which he challenged leader of the VA Wolfgang Schüssel at the June 2001 party conference in Trieste, where he won on the second ballot. Schwarzenegger revitalized the VA with his popular appeal, moderate politics and "consensus" message, winning a resounding victory in the 2003 polls over Franz Vranitzky's SPÖ after early elections were called. The VA earned its first-ever majority government with him as Chancellor and Schwarzenegger led them to majority victories in 2007 and 2011, making him the only Austrian Chancellor of the center-right to never form a coalition government since 1954 (Alois Mock's third government was a coalition with the NVP, though his first two governments were in the majority). After disastrous provincial performances in 2012 and 2014 and a poor approval rating, Schwarzenegger announced in the summer of 2014 that he would retire at the end of October and was succeeded by ___. Schwarzenegger remains the leader of the VA, a position he will retain until after the 2015 elections.
