- Gumbel was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is the son of Rhea Alice (née LeCesne), a city clerk, and Richard Dunbar Gumbel, a judge. He attended and was graduated from De La Salle Institute in Chicago, IL., while growing up on the South Side of the city. He graduated from Bates College in 1970. In 1971, he became editor of Black Sports Magazine, leaving the following year. Gumbel began his television career in October 1972, when he was made a sportscaster for KNBC-TV out of Los Angeles.
- Gumbel contributed a "Sweet Corn Succotash" recipe for Miss Piggy's 1996 cookbook, In the Kitchen with Miss Piggy.
- Bryant Gumbel is best known for being a liberal journalist on the morning television program, The Today Show. He single handedly spearheaded the effort to keep George W. Bush from speaking to The NAACP. His plan failed, though, as President Bush selflessly risked life and limb to speak to his people.
- In "If I'm Dyin', I'm Lyin'", he stars with his brother in Gumbel 2 Gumbel Beach Justice, a fictional crime drama that aired on NBC. Peter Griffin becomes very upset when the network cancels the show. He has his son, Chris, fake a terminal illness so his wish to have the show put back on the air could be granted. An episode of Real Sports was mentioned in "The Father, the Son, and the Holy Fonz", in which he did a story on Dennis Rodman.
