Blaustein was the chairman of the medieval European history department at the UC Berkeley. He'd read Steve Whortleberry's dissertation with a very critical eye, fighting Whortleberry on everything. Nonetheless, Blaustein was sufficiently impressed with Whortleberry's work that when Blaustein went to Hamburg to teach, he had Whortleberry cover his classes at Berkeley.
