  • Osami Murata was a Japanese radio man from Tokyo who was relocated to Hawaii, after its occupation by Japan, at the KGMB studio, and broadcast radio propaganda describing how life was "better" under the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. Murata worked with local Japanese immigrant Jiro Takahashi in the radio show broadcasting interviews on his life and how it had improved under the Japanese. This led to Takahashi gaining a level of local celebrity with people referring to him as "The Fisherman" or "Mr. Fisherman". Initially, Murata was very friendly toward Takahashi. But by the time of the second U.S. attempt at retaking Hawaii, Murata assigned Jiro a non-believable script stating that all Japanese Hawaiian residents supported Japan against the Americans. Jiro was very reluctant to say it as he understand well that not everyone supported Japan, including his own two sons. This caused Murata to reveal to a stunned Takahashi that he was being used as a propaganda tool from the very beginning.
