| - Following the end of the American Civil War and the Treaty of Halifax, the founding fathers of the Confederate States of America needed to decide on a constitution and a form of government for the nation. Many proposed a government similar to the United States, however Robert E. Lee felt that the Confederate States should bear a different government and a different name from the United States. Lee and President Jefferson Davis soon proposed the idea of a monarch and a royal family to rule over the Confederate States along with the three other government branches.

In 1865, following the drafting of the constitution, the Monarchy Act was passed, crowning General Robert E. Lee as the first king, known as King Robert I. The name of the Confederate States of America was changed to the Union of Confederate States to distance itself from the United States.
