Spacing was a crude but effective form of execution in which a prisoner would be ejected from an airlock without any protection from vacuum. It was a preferred method of execution on starships because it tended to leave no mess or evidence (except in space on a predictable trajectory from the ship's location at the time of the spacing), as well as being an effective disciplinary tool.

- If a being was spaced while a ship was in hyperspace, the body would disintegrate (its atoms would "cease to have any coherent meaning") once outside the ship's protective shield.
- Spacing was the practice of ejecting a human being into space without the protection of a skinsuit or other form of space suit. Many crews of slave ships spaced their cargo when expecting to be boarded, thus getting rid of the evidence. However, after the ratification of the equipment clause to the Cherwell Convention, the Star Kingdom of Manticore and the Republic of Haven adopted the official position that a slaver crew found without a living cargo would be immediately tried for mass murder and, if convicted, executed by ejection from an airlock without space suits. - Spacing is a human colloquial term used to describe death by exposure to vacuum by way of explosive decompression into open space. Spacing was the Earth Alliance's preferred means of execution, though only two crimes carried this form of death penalty: mutiny and treason. Considered to be a particularly gruesome means of death, spacing was thought to be an effective deterrent.
- Spacing is the utilization of a character's range in comparison to the opponent's range to ensure a character's attack makes contact while the opponent's attack does not. Spacing is performed by accounting the range of the attack the player plans to use and take steps to position themselves at the optimum distance from their opponent. The goal is to withdraw to the maximum distance possible; ideally, in this position their best attacks can hit while their opponents' cannot. Air speed is also a factor with characters like Jigglypuff who can use their amazing air mobility to "fade in and out" with their aerial attacks. While other characters like Donkey Kong and Ichigo can rely on sheer range alone. For example; Ichigo's neutral aerial has good range in front of him making it a good spacing

When he was 17, Stephen Franklin and some friends were on a transport on the Moon-Mars run when one of them decided to hide in an airlock, hoping to jump out and surprise them. He accidentally pushed the wrong button, blowing himself out into space. Stephen watched him gasping for air as he died and when they eventually pulled the body in, he noticed the eyes were frozen. The incident so unnerved him that he'd later say whenever anybody joked about spacing someone he never found it very funny.

Air speed is also a factor with characters like Jigglypuff who can use their amazing air mobility to "fade in and out" with their aerial attacks. While other characters like Donkey Kong and Ichigo can rely on sheer range alone. For example; Ichigo's neutral aerial has good range in front of him making it a good spacing tool. Spacing is considered effective for characters such as Marth. Spacing is character-specific and influenced by the stage being played. Platforms will drastically affect spacing. The key to mastering spacing is experience with learning the range of other characters and how to space against them when faced with a given situation. Tilts can also be used for spacing to great affect especially Donkey Kong and Ichigo's forward tilts which are excellent spacing tools due to their good range. Special moves like Zero Suit Samus's Plasma Whip can be used to similar results. Almost all projectiles are good tools for spacing due to their range. Spacing is known for being specially effective against characters with poor range, such as Wario, making it more difficult for these characters to approach and land hits on their opponents. Spacing is also crucial for landing the sweet spot of certain attacks like Mario's forward smash, the majority of Marth's attacks and Zelda's Lightning Kicks, both forward and back aerial versions.
