In 1881, during the Second Mexican War, the Army of the Potomac crossed into Virginia and forced CS Forces in the area to withdraw to the town of Front Royal. There they waited until CS General Thomas Jackson arrived to take command. While there, he made the town his headquarters as he prepared for the attack on Winchester. During the Great War, the town was occupied by US Forces as they pushed the Army of Northern Virginia back into their own country. After peace was declared in 1917, the town became part of the US.
