- in embryology, the sexual differentiation of the brain occurs at a rather distant time from sexual differentiation of the gonads. If testosterone is present, the brain goes through very specific changes (the biggest of which is massive apoptosis/cell death) and gonads turn into penis/testes. If there is no testosterone present, the brain stays "female" and ovary and vagina develop. If there is disparate testosterone:estrogen ratio at varying times, whether that be genetic conditions, environmental exposures (think ?PCOS, ?BPA, ?plastics, synthetic estrogens), or random chance, you can truly develop with a brain that matches that of the opposite gender. All things being on a spectrum, it really helped me to understand the variety of our human journeys.
