An obol is a silver Greek coin worth a sixth of a drachma. In Greek tradition, such a coin would be placed in or on the mouth of a dead person before burial in order for the deceased to pay or bribe the ferryman of the River Styx, Charon, to deliver their soul to the lands of the dead. In the wizarding world, such coins are also used by practitioners of magic to compel elves to transport them between the Lands Above and the Lands Below. In the Spring of 2009, Darla Dearborn bought an obol through John Manuelito, though it was later stolen by Charlie and given to Alexandra Quick.
