In the 1800s there was growing nationalims in Europe, and in Giumetta. Alessandro Conti, the royalist pretender, returned to the country in 1841 and began getting people to support independence. When independence was declared there were still many people against the monarchy.So on Agust 20, 1849 the Giumettan Republic was started. Rebel leader Giovanni Girardo was made president and ruled as president. The south part of the country, including the capital Petrona became republican and the north was Royalist, with the capital at Cortina. Each side declared contrtol over the whole island, and they both began to raise armies to fight.
