| - The Republic of Ossetia, colloquially known as Ossetia, is a republic of the Soviet Union located within the Caucasus. The republic was established in the early 1990s, becoming one of the newest republics following the end of communist rule. Prior to which the republic was divided into two autonomous areas, with Russia controlling the north and Georgia controlling the south. With Georgia gaining independence in the early 1990s, the autonomous regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia expressed their desires to remain part of the Soviet Union. These tensions culminated into fighting between Georgia and the Soviet Union, ending with the annexation of these regions in 1992. Within a year following South Ossetia's admission, neighboring North Ossetia unanimously voted for unification, establishing the modern day republic. The capital of the unified republic was moved to Java in 1994 as a compromise capital. The Ossetian people make up the majority of the republic's population, with Georgians and Russians making up the largest minorities (with many Georgians having relocated following the conflicts of the early 1990s). Ossetian and Russian are the two official languages of the republic. The Ossetian language is an Iranian language, making it one of the two Iranian-speaking republics of the Soviet Union (the other being Tajikistan). The Georgian and Ingush languages are also spoken within the republic. The Eastern Orthodox Church comprises the majority of Ossetia's residence, with Islam and Paganism coming in as the largest minorities. The republic's location within the Caucasus gives it a resource-rich economy, with tourism also making up much of the republics GDP.
