  • The United Kingdom general election of 1983 was held on the 12th of July 1983. It gave the governing Labour party a second consecutive secure victory against the Conservative Party led by Margaret Thatcher. The Labour government from 1978 - 1982 was mired in union disputes a stagnated economy and and lack of finances available to maintain the welfare state, in late 1978 Chancellor of the Exchequer Denis Healey had attempted to cut public workers spending. Only to run head long into union opposition with a series of strikes and industrial unrest. To control this throughout 1980 Callaghan was intent to implement trade union reform with huge opposition from renown Leftists led by the maverick left-winger Tony Benn. With support from the Liberal Party and many Conservatives the proposal past through the Commons and the House of Lords with majority support. However, with the conclusion of the Falklands war and British victory Labour was riding high with a 15% lead in the polls during the early months of 1983. James Callaghan however, Callaghan unexpectedly resigned in May 1983 replaced by Denis Healey, a shrewd political operator, famous for his protruding eye brows and violent outbursts against the Labour left. He thereafter dissolved parliament, taking advantage of a rapidly recovering economy and the victory in the Falklands.
