  • The Cenobites are adherents of their own extradimensional religion known as The Order of the Gash within the Hellraiser universe. The Cenobites are disfigured, sexless, sadomasochistic entites tasked with capturing whoever solved the riddle of the demonic puzzle boz known as Lament Configuration and submiting them to extreme physical torture, an act meant to reveal all the hidden pleasures of intense pain. These beings have been identified as a type of demon, created from the souls of mortals who have given into forbidden hedonistic, and often disturbing, forms of pleasure.
  • Every monastery has a different philosophy and a different focus. Some claim to teach meditation techniques that grant complete immunity to the powers of Chaos, others claim to unlock the completely safe magical power hidden inside every Human being, and others claim to impart ancient secrets of combat that go far beyond those known today. Evidence suggests that all of the monasteries are wrong, and the vast majority of Cenobites believe that the Cenobites at other monasteries are deluded fools. Almost all monasteries inflict great pain and deprivation on their inhabitants, ostensibly as part of the path to enlightenment. It could be argued that, as many Cenobites flee their monasteries, this process actually works.[1a]
  • The Cenobites are extradimensional beings who appear in the works of Clive Barker, including the The Hellbound Heart, The Scarlet Gospels and the nine Hellraiser films. They are also mentioned, in passing, in the novel Weaveworld . They are mentioned by Immacolata, who calls them “The Surgeons.” They can reach Earth's reality only through a schism in time and space, which is opened and closed using certain unearthly artifacts. The most common form for these artifacts is that of an inconspicuous-looking puzzle box called the Lament Configuration.

abstract
  • The Cenobites are extradimensional beings who appear in the works of Clive Barker, including the The Hellbound Heart, The Scarlet Gospels and the nine Hellraiser films. They are also mentioned, in passing, in the novel Weaveworld . They are mentioned by Immacolata, who calls them “The Surgeons.” They can reach Earth's reality only through a schism in time and space, which is opened and closed using certain unearthly artifacts. The most common form for these artifacts is that of an inconspicuous-looking puzzle box called the Lament Configuration. The Cenobites vary in number, appearance, and motivations depending on the medium (film, comic book, etc.) in which they appear. The involvement of multiple parties in the production of Hellraiser films and comics (many eschewing the creative supervision of Clive Barker) have led to varying levels of consistency regarding the canonical aspects of their philosophies and abilities.
  • Cenobites were Human worshippers of Hash'ak'gik and followed Mortanius in the worship of him and offered Blood Sacrifices to appease Him and avert his wrath. The held their rituals below Avernus Cathedral.
Within the original novella and the first Hellraiser film, the Cenobites were not truly evil creatures, but rather neutral, as their purposse was to offer nihilistic humans relief from mundane sexual acts. However, much like their leader, Pinhead, they would develop a more aggressive nature as the series progressed and became more "standard" horror characters that killed and maimed without purpose.
It could be argued that, as many Cenobites flee their monasteries, this process actually works.[1a] The buildings of a monastery are always simple, austere, and well-fortified. They have a single gate, representing the single-mindedness required to learn their secrets (and making it easy to defend), and at least one tall tower, representing the heights to which they can lead a person (and providing advance warning of any attacks). Beyond that, they are suited to the location, the resources of the Cenobites, and the residents’ individual preferences.[1a] The members of a community are almost invariably of a single gender, though both male and female monasteries are known. Most Cenobites are Human; members of other races rarely show much interest, though most monasteries would admit them if they asked. Unwanted children are sometimes left on the doorsteps of monasteries. These children are taken in; those who do not run away are accepted as Cenobites. Most run away.[1a]
