| - The Earth Cold War was a protracted struggle chiefly between the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics on Earth. It also involved the allied nations of both of these countries. This struggle began in the time period following the Second World War, and lasted until the collapse of the Soviet Union on December 25, 1991.
- As the two dominant nation-states to emerge after World War II, the United States of America (USA) and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) were diametrically opposed in economic and social philosophy. However, the devastating effects of that conflict combined with the enormous nuclear arsenal of the two countries made open hostilities a disastrous prospect for both. Rather than risk mutual annihilation the two powers engaged in a "cold war" that consisted of intense espionage, political manipulation of satellite states (see "Brush Wars"), and covert military actions. As such it was not an open "war" between the USA and USSR, in a conventional sense.

The atmosphere created by the Cold War put enormous strains on the governments and citizens of both countries. Suspicion of each other's motives was the normal state of affairs, and the military leadership of both sides regularly argued for armed conflict. When Quark, Rom, Nog, and Odo were thrown back in time to 1947 the military of the US accused them of being involved with the Russians, their Cold War adversary. After the US was on the verge of rejecting Quark's deal, the Ferengi threatened to sell 24th century technology to the Soviets. (DS9: "Little Green Men") Julian Bashir's holosuite program Julian Bashir, Secret Agent was set during the 1960s at the height of the Cold War. (DS9: "Our Man Bashir") The Cold War was ended in 1991 when the Soviet Union was dissolved. (VOY: "Future's End")
The Julian Bashir, Secret Agent holosuite program was set in 1960s Earth. Bashir played the role of a British secret agent working at the height of Earth's cold war. The United Kingdom was one of the principal parties in the cold war, having taken the side of the Americans against the Soviets and their allies. (DS9 episode: "Our Man Bashir") Historian Trae of Vulcanis claimed that a time traveller intent on disrupting Human history would have a high degree of success in visiting October 1963 due to the tension between the Soviet Union and the United States which existed at that time. (TOS novel: Ishmael) During the 1960s, the proliferation of nuclear weapons led to the possibility that if the tensions led to actual warfare that a nuclear holocaust would take place. An alien power sent several agents, most notably Gary Seven to Earth to help humanity survive this dangerous period in their history. (TOS episode: "Assignment: Earth"; TOS novel: Assignment: Eternity) In the late 1980s, Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev saw that his country was experiencing economic and social hardship, which had been brought about by extensive military spending and the inefficiencies inherent in central economic planning. He began a program of Perestroika, or "restructuring" to liberalize the Soviet Union - including the elimination of corruption, simplification of bureaucracy, and production improvements. The tension level began to decline, and by 1989 the Berlin Wall had fallen in Germany. In 1991 hardliners in the Soviet government attempted to roll back the reforms by staging an attempted coup. Within a few days when the leaders of the coup were unable to consolidate power, and the coup failed. Afterwards many Soviet constituent members began to assert their own independence. This led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union on December 25, 1991. The cold war was finally over (TOS novel: Probe)
