  • While this short is considered one of the finest cartoons ever made, it's also considered one of the most racist, and as a result, it has remained on the infamous "Censored Eleven" list of Warner Bros. cartoons, and it seemed very unlikely that it would see the light of day outside of bootlegs -- that is, until Warner Bros. announced an official DVD release of the Censored Eleven. This cartoon also holds the place of #21 on The 50 Greatest Cartoons list, as well as a position on The 100 Greatest Looney Tunes.
  • In this version of the story, all of the characters are African American, and speak all of their dialogue in rhyme. The story is set during World War II in the United States, and the original tale's Fairy tale wholesomeness is replaced in this film by a hot jazz mentality and sexual overtones. Several scenes unique to Disney's film version of Snow White, such as the wishing-well sequence, the forest full of staring eyes, and the awakening kiss, are directly parodied in this film. The film was intended to have been named So White and de Sebben Dwarfs, which producer Leon Schlesinger thought was too close to the original film's actual title, and had changed to Coal Black and De Sebben Dwarfs.[citation needed]
  • NCh: Hey, post-racial America! You know what? NCh (vo): The Southern Poverty Law Center says that there are no race-based hate groups anymore. NCh (vo): No one has ever made shit-headed racial slurs on Twitter. NCh: And most importantly, we have a black president! And so, you know what that means? RACISM IS OVER! NCh: So today, we're going to take a look at a short cartoon from the era of when racism existed. (A montage of clips from the Looney Tunes cartoon Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs play) Dwarf: (voiceover) Well, hallelujah! (A clip of Birth of a Nation is shown) (Cut back to Coal Black)
