However, upon leaving college, the Financial Crisis of 1969 occurred, and he found it hard to find a job of any kind. Ford, running out of options, was forced to join the US Army. He was accepted into West Point in 1970, and graduated in 1974 as a lieutenant. Ford was first stationed at the Siberian Detention Center in 1975, and was transferred to the embassy in France for guard duty. In 1984, he was honorably discharged at the rank of captain.
