The Gibsons are fans of Vachon's guitar. (The faction gets its name from the make of the guitar.) In September 2012, when there was discussion on FORKNI-L@LISTS.PSU.EDU about creating new factions focused on popular props in Forever Knight, some of the Vaqueras were interested in forming a subfaction for the guitar. Discussion then ensued about the best name. Gibson Girls (suggested by Greer Watson) had some support, but was rejected for excluding any male members of the faction. The punning G-Strings (for guitar strings, "of course") was suggested by Walt Doherty, but found offensive by some faction members.

The Vaqueras finally decided instead on "the Gibsons", a non-sexist compromise that had been suggested by Liz the Lucky on 13 September.
