He played junior hockey for the St. Jerome Alouettes in 1960-61 and then for the Montreal Junior Canadiens from 1961 to 1964. In 1964-65 the Montreal Canadiens farmhand turned pro with the Omaha Knights and then played two seasons for the Houston Apollos. He had very little chance of breaking into the powerful Canadiens' roster. The World Hockey Association (WHA) gave him a new opportunity in 1972. Charlebois signed with the Ottawa Nationals and scored 24 goals and 40 assists in 1972-73. In the WHA Charlebois scored 32 goals and 50 assists in 188 games.

In 1964-65 the Montreal Canadiens farmhand turned pro with the Omaha Knights and then played two seasons for the Houston Apollos. He had very little chance of breaking into the powerful Canadiens' roster. In June, 1967 he was traded to the expansion Minnesota North Stars. He got into 7 games for the Stars (scoring one goal)but then was traded to the Phoenix Roadrunners of the Western Hockey League. He stayed with them for almost four full seasons. He played for the Tulsa Oilers in 1971-72. The World Hockey Association (WHA) gave him a new opportunity in 1972. Charlebois signed with the Ottawa Nationals and scored 24 goals and 40 assists in 1972-73. In 1973 he was dealt to the New England Whalers but his scoring touch was gone. He only scored 4 goals in 1973-74. Charlebois bounced between the Whalers and the minor pros until his retirement in 1976. In the WHA Charlebois scored 32 goals and 50 assists in 188 games.
