  • When Davy Jones marks Captain Jack Sparrow with the Black Spot, Jack races for the nearest land to escape the Kraken, a sea monster that can only attack in open water. He lands on Pelegosto, a typical Caribbean island with sandy beaches and thick jungles. The Black Pearl's crew is taken captive by a cannibal tribe. Several crew members are eaten and their bones made into cages to hold the others. Jack is made chief of the native tribe. While Will Turner searches for Jack, he finds the Black Pearl beached on Pelegosto. He is captured by the natives and imprisoned with the crew. Mr. Gibbs tells him the cannibals believe Jack is a god and must be eaten to free his spirit from its "fleshy prison." The surviving Black Pearl crewmen escape to the ship, and are quickly joined by Jack, who is chased by the cannibals. They encounter Pintel and Ragetti attempting to steal the Pearl, and, recruiting the two, head for sea. Dialogue from the first film indicates Jack may have previously been to this island. In a scene from The Curse of the Black Pearl Jack tells Royal Marines Mullroy and Murtogg about his previous adventures and says, "...and then they made me their chief." He may have been referring to Pelegosto. He also seems fluent in the Cannibal's language (which seems to be a pidgin language), further indicating he's been there before however it is most likely that it could have been a different island.
