abstract
  • The National Democratic Confederation (Span: Confederación Democrática Nacional) is a Chilean political coalition currently consisting of the Liberal Renewal Party and Gremialist Union. Besides, currently is the second majority coalition in the Congress of Chile, after the Alliance. During 2010 and 2012 supported the Presidency of the Christian Democratic President Sebastian Piñera. The CDN was in opposition from 1998 until 2006 in both the Congress and Presidency, but have controlled both branches of government at all other times since the fall of Communism in Chile in 1989. In September of 2012, the Christian Democrat Party and National Party announced they would leave the CDN to form their own coalition, to take effect as of the 2014 elections, after divisions emerged following the term of Joaquín Lavín as President of Chile and the insurgent 2010 campaign of Hernán Larraín.
