Determinism was invented in 1985 during a murder case in Cleveland, Ohio, when a man named Peter Woodcock pleaded innocent to a 1st degree murder charge on the grounds that he was destined to kill his wife so there was nothing he could actually do about it. When the prosecuter pointed out that he earlier told the jury he was an atheist, Woodcock declared that he was 'destined' to kill his wife because of the laws of physics and his DNA rather than via supernatural forces, and thus the atheists version of destiny was born.

  • Determinism is the philosophical proposition that every event, including human cognition and behavior, decision and action, is causally determined by an unbroken chain of prior occurrences. Numerous historical debates, many varieties and philosophical positions on the subject of determinism exist from traditions throughout the world.
  • Possible ways to look at the future and what we should be doing in regards to it. * predicting the inevitable future * predicting the possible futures (scenarios) * choosing the future (from the range of possible futures) * actively creating better futures Originally, in 1960s it was more about predicting.

Technological determinism is the idea that technology determines the future to a large extent. If this is true, some predictions can be made confidently by looking at the technically possible things (including at the ultimate limits of possible) and merely assigning a date to them.
