Starting positions in the field of thirty-three are unknown, but Johnson finished the historic event in 25th. He fared no better at the historic Daytona Beach Road Course, finishing 26th. Johnson again competed in a two-race schedule in 1950, finishing a career-best 60th in points. Despite starting last (25th) to open up the year at Charlotte, Johnson completed all but eleven laps during the actual race and was rewarded with a career-best 8th place finish. On the flip side, however, Johnson overheated to finish 26th at Langhorne. Johnson didn't return to the sport for a while after that, resurfacing again at Raleigh in 1955. Starting 17th in the field of twenty-nine, Johnson struggled to last (29th) after losing a piston very early. He ran no better at Darlington, as tire issues left him 46th. Finally, Johnson made his closer in 1956, competing at Road America road course. Johnson showed that he had some road racing talent, starting 15th in the field of twenty-six and plowing his way through the field to finish 9th, just his second career top-ten.
