The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at The David Beckham Academy on Tuesday 3rd November, 2009. Now in their 22nd year, the awards recognise the whole spectrum of female sporting success from leading sportswomen through to rising stars, to those working behind the scenes. Spofforth was recognised for her impressive performance in Rome where she broke the world record on her way to winning gold in the 100m Backstroke. She also finished fourth in the 200m Backstroke and helped the British Gas squad to fourth in the 4x100m Medley Relay. Halsall made a name for herself on the international circuit after she stormed to the silver medal in the 100m Freestyle and finished in fifth place in the 50m Freestyle. The Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year Award category is still open for public voting by visiting Log on and help make Gemma Spofforth Sportswoman of the year. The 2009 nominees are:
