He played junior hockey for the Winnipeg St Johns in 1913-14 and then senior for various Winnipeg teams from 1914 to 1919. He won the Allan Cup with the Winnipeg 61st Battalion in 1916. From 1919 to 1921 he played with the senior Moose Jaw Maple Leafs. In 1921 he was signed as a free agent with the Regina Capitals of the Western Canada Hockey League. Sparrow also played with the Edmonton Eskimos and the Calgary Tigers of the same league. In 1924-25 the Tigers loaned him to the Boston Bruins. After playing eight games, scoring no points, he was returned to the Tigers.
