  • The Plebian Rebellion (also known as the Conflict of the Orders) was a political struggle between the Plebeians (commoners) and Patricians (aristocrats) of the ancient Roman Republic, in which the Plebeians sought political equality with the Patricians. This arguement started around 494 B.C. The Rebellion took the form of a number of "secessions" over a period of years. During each secession the commoners of Rome either went on a general strike, or left the city entirely. These acts brought the city of Rome to a standstill. Through this exertion of political power, the commoners of Rome eventually gained a degree of formal political power and civil rights in Ancient Rome.
