He played junior hockey for the Brandon Wheat Kings from 1968 to 1970 and was picked 77th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft. Fitchner played in the Penguins minor pro system until 1973 without any NHL time. In 1973 he jumped to the Edmonton Oilers of the World Hockey Association. After one season with that team he played two seasons for the Indianapolis Racers until settling down with the Quebec Nordiques in 1975-76. In 414 WHA games Fitchner scored 68 goals and 139 assists. In the NHL Fitchner scored 12 goals and 20 assists in 78 games.
