  • Prince Gustavus was the son of prime minister, Count Oscar Bernadotte and Countess Sophia, née Princess of Nassau. Although not himself born a prince, he had close ties to European royalty through his mother, and through his paternal grand-mother, Josephina of Leuchtenberg. Gustaf Bernadotte was a professional tennis player, calling himself "Mr G". He married on 20 September 1881 in Karlsruhe to princess Victoria of Baden, and the couple settled in Sweden. Victoria became Queen of Sweden in 1929, but died the year after. When his brother-in-law (Victoria's brother) became king of Sweden on 15 December 1907, the new king having no issue, he (Gustaf Bernadotte) was immediately created Prince of Sweden, including all his legitimate agnatic heirs, descending from the union with princess Victoria. The couple had three sons: Gustavus Adolphus, who inherited the throne and became the first monarch of the house of Bernadotte William Erik
