John Thomas Oliver (10 December 1928 - 27 April 2011) was an English politician and academician who served as Prime Minister of the Republic from 1987 to 1990, and as Leader of the Labour Party from 1984 to 1990. He was the Leader of the Opposition while Labour was in the minority from 1984-1987. He represented the South Manchester constituency from 1963 until his defeat in the Whig landslide of 1990. After leaving politics, he was the chairman of a trade activist group and was a public speaker until his death in 2011.
