The University of California, Irvine is a public research university primarily situated in suburban Irvine, California, USA; a significant portion of the campus falls into the neighboring community of Newport Beach. It is one of ten University of California campuses and is commonly known as UCI or UC Irvine. UC Irvine is named after the Irvine Company, which donated 1,000 acres (4 km²) (for a single dollar) and sold another 500 acres (2 km²) to the University of California. Founded in 1965 at the same time as its sister campus, the University of California, Santa Cruz, UCI was one of the two youngest campuses of the University of California system until the recent opening of University of California, Merced, the tenth campus.
