The 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge is used mostly by NATO forces. It is larger and heavier than the other standard NATO round, the 5.56×45mm NATO. It was developed in the 1950s, for the M60 medium machine gun and the M14 rifle. When the M14 was superseded by the M16, the 7.62×51mm NATO was mostly replaced by the smaller 5.5×45mm NATO. However, it is still the standard round for medium machine guns, either mobile, mounted or even vehicle mounted, and for many sniper rifles.

- The 7.62×51mm NATO (official NATO nomenclature 7.62 NATO) is a rifle cartridge developed in the 1950s as a standard for small arms among NATO countries. It should not be confused with the similarly named Russian 7.62×54mmR cartridge.

- After World War I the U.S. Army was looking for a new military round for light semi- and fully-automatic weapons. The project was the T65 rifle. In 1932, the .276 Pedersen was rejected in favor of the already established .30 caliber cartridges. In September 1952, the .308 Winchester made its commercial debut. On December 15, 1953, NATO adopted T65E3 Ordinance test round. The T65E3 Ordnance test round was then standardized by CIP and renamed the 7.62x51mm NATO round.
